Opening the conference, the First Deputy Chairperson of the Committee Olena Bondarenko noted that Ukraine has ratified the European Convention on Transfrontier Television on December 17, 2008 and has taken commitments to conscientiously fulfill provisions of this international act and bring national legislation in line with the European Convention. The people’s deputy informed those present on the completion of work over a new version of the Law on audiovisual services that will be referred for consideration by the Verkhovna Rada in the nearest time.
Chairman of the subcommittee on television and radio broadcasting of the Committee on Freedom of Speech and Information Mykola Kniazhytskyi, Chairman of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council Volodymyr Manzhosov, and Secretary of the National Union of Journalists Viktor Nabuzko focused their attention on the peculiarities of legal use of provisions of the European Convention in the activity of Ukrainian broadcasters, as well as on the challenges and problems of informational safety, etc.
Participants of the conference upheld initiative of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, particularly, the PACE Resolution of January 31, this year on reconsideration of the European Convention on Transfrontier Television in order to adapt it to modern technological standards.
The event was organized jointly with the Project of the European Union and the Council of Europe “Promoting European Standards in the Ukrainian Media Environment.”
